Systolic failure in two Great Danes with hypothyroidism
A very interesting case report: two Great Danes with heart problems which had concurrent hypothyroidism - a common problem in large and giant breeds. But a differential diagnosis that needs to be considered in all patients with heart probems!

Two Great Danes were evaluated for signs of congestive heart failure. Dilated cardiomyopathy was diagnosed in each dog.

Both dogs were diagnosed concurrently with primary hypothyroidism.

Following appropriate supplementation with levothyroxine, both dogs showed significant improvement in myocardial contractility, as demonstrated by increased fractional shortening and reductions in left atrial size, and left ventricular end-systolic and diastolic diameters.

These observations suggest that hypothyroidism may lead to myocardial failure in Great Danes that is partially or fully reversible following thyroid hormone replacement therapy, and that hypothyroidism should be considered in all Great Danes presenting with systolic failure.

Electroretinography as a prognostic indicator after retinal reattachment surgery
Retinal detachment is one of the ophthalmological emergencies, and even if the diagnosis is made early and a reattachment surgery is performed immediately many dogs do not regain postoperative vision. This 18‐month prospective study recorded signalment, duration, cause, and extent of retinal detachment and pre‐operative vision status. Rod and mixed rod‐cone ERG responses were recorded prior to RRS. Referring veterinary ophthalmologists assessed vision 2 months postoperatively to determine whether pre‐operative electroretinography (ERG) predicts postoperative vision in dogs undergoing retinal reattachment surgery (RRS).
