Unusual manifestation of salmonellosis in a young foal (case report)
Diarrhea in a foal which is caused by Salmonella typhimurium is not unusual in foals. But this foal developed other clinical signs which are not obviously associated with the diarrhea, e.g. ischemic necrosis of distal limbs. A very interesting although fatal case!

A 5-month-old mixed-breed filly presented with diarrhea due to Salmonella typhimurium infection and subsequently developed pneumonia in addition to ischemic necrosis of distal limbs.

Pulmonary lesions were characterized by numerous discrete, disseminated pyogranulomas with intralesional fungal hyphae.

The morphologic characteristics of fungal hyphae were consistent with Aspergillus spp., and large numbers of A fumigatus were isolated from lung tissue via fungal culture.

Lesions in all 4 limbs were similar in distribution, duration, and severity and were characterized by coagulation necrosis accompanied by occasional thrombi in small vessels without evidence of thrombosis of larger limb arteries.

Thus, limb lesions are consistent with symmetrical peripheral gangrene, a potential complication of sepsis.

Theiler´s disease in a Trakehner caused by contaminated tetanus vaccinemembers
An 11â€yearâ€old Trakehner gelding was presented for evaluation of lethargy, decreased appetite, mild icterus, and elevated hepatic enzyme activities. Physical examination, serum chemistry results, and liver biopsy histopathologic findings were supportive of Theiler`s disease. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing results of serum and liver tissue were positive for nonprimate (equine) hepacivirus (NPHV) and a novel equine parvovirusâ€hepatitis virus (EqPVâ€H). A serious and finally fatal problem, caused by contaminated vaccine.
