Infectious Disease - Equitrim®
|
Although they are companion animals, horses are usually kept in conditions which have more in common with cattle than pets. As such, horses are exposed to a range of infective agents, including bacterial and fungal pathogens. Boehringer Ingelheim provides products to tackle both of these disease groups.

Equitrim® (Trimethoprim BP and Suplhadiazine BP) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against a wide range of bacterial pathogens, and is used to treat many different bacterial conditions including bronchopneumonia, strangles, septicaemia, wound infections, and diarrhoea. Courses of treatment usually last 5 days, or until two days after the cessation of clinical signs. The product is available in both a granule and paste preparations.
Equifulvin® (Griseofulvin PhEur) is an antifungal agent used in the treatment of Dermatophytosis (`Ringworm`). Although less common than bacterial infection, it is estimated that 20,000 horses per year suffer from fungal skin disease, causing discomfort and hair loss to the horse. Ringworm also presents a very real threat of zoonotic infection (ie: infection of humans in contact) for those working with and caring for affected horses. Equifulvin is a proven and effective equine treatment against such fungal infections, and available in a simple food supplement formulation.
