ULTRASOUND-GUIDED REMOVAL OF SUPERFICIAL PLANT AWNS
Especially in fall, plant awns cause problems in a number of dogs. They often cause a foreign body granuloma or abscess, and their surgical removal can become a real challenge. If the foreign body cannot be localized and completely retrieved, recurrence of the abscess is likely. Ultrasound-guided removal sounds very effective and promising!

In this report, we describe ultrasound-guided retrieval as an alternative to standard surgical retrieval in animals where the plant awn can be identified sonographically.

This procedure was used in six dogs with a superficial abscess due to a plant awn, and in all dogs the foreign body was successfully retrieved with Hartmann forceps.

No complication was observed and no abscess recurred.

Minimally invasive ultrasound-guided plant awn retrieval appears to be a safe effective method of retrieving superficially located plant awns in the dog.

High field magnetic resonance imaging to describe soft tissues in the equine stifle High field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly used for horses with suspected stifle disease, however there is limited available information on normal imaging anatomy and potential incidental findings. The aim of this prospective, anatomic study was to develop an optimized high field MRI protocol for evaluation of the equine stifle and provide detailed descriptions of the normal MRI appearance of the stifle soft tissues, using ultrasound and gross pathological examination as comparison tests.
